Rumor: Warner Bros. thinking of firing Daniel Radcliffe

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

According to The Daily Mail in the UK, executives at Warner Bros, producers of the Harry Potter movies, are said to have been “utterly dismayed” by publicity shots of Radcliffe naked for his appearance in Equus, which starts preview performances tonight, as well as the fact that he spends a full 10 minutes on stage without his clothes.

The article in The Daily Mail says studio chiefs are worried that the nude scenes could damage their multi-million-dollar film franchise and could even lead to Daniel Radcliffe being replaced as Harry Potter in the films.

One of the executives was quoted as saying, “Warner Bros have been building up their publicity machine for Harry’s first - chaste - screen kiss when the next Potter film comes out in the summer.

“Now our star is out there doing full-frontal sex. We’ve been blown completely out of the water by this.”

Equus officially opens at the Gielgud Theatre on 27 February. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix premieres in theaters this summer on July 13, and the final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be published one week later, on July 21.

They won’t fire him. He’s worth too much to them and they care about money too much.

They grow up so quickly. Ready for tonight is actor Daniel Radcliffe, ready to debut his role for special screening theater audiences in the latest revival of the play Equus” in the West End of London.

Radcliffe, 17, has no qualms about being shown naked in Peter Schaffer’s play Equus, and despite the outcry from juvenile fans of the Harry Potter franchise, it ultimately shows Radcliffe is dead set on a career as an adult actor.

Radcliffe is adept at playing a boy wizard, but now he will prove himself as a real stage thespian.

The play, first staged more than 30 years ago, Radcliffe plays stablehand Alan Strang, who blinds six horses with a metal spike after a disturbing sexual experience.

The Daily Mail states that Warner Bros. studio - the studio that brought Rowling’s books to the screen, allegedly are “utterly dismayed” by distributed publicity shots of Radcliffe naked, as well as the fact that he spends a full 10 minutes on stage nude.

The Mail purports that studio chiefs are “said to fear the scenes could damage their multi-million-dollar film franchise and could even lead to Radcliffe being replaced as the young wizard.”

“Warner Bros have been building up their publicity machine for Harry’s first - chaste - screen kiss when the next Potter film (Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix) comes out in the summer.

“Now our star is out there doing full-frontal sex. We’ve been blown completely out of the water by this,” according to the Daily Mail.

Equus has a preview showing tonight at the Gielgud Theatre. The play officially opens on February 27th.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe can’t wait to get his hands on J.K. Rowling’s last book in the fantasy series–and he hopes his character has been done away with.

Rowling has finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and it is due to hit bookstores on July 21.

Radcliffe, who has so far played Potter in four film adaptations and has signed to appear in the last three, desires to say farewell to the franchise in style–with a dramatic death.

He says, “I sort of hope I’ll die in it. I think that’s the only way Jo can end it and I’ve a melodramatic yearning for a death scene.”

The 17-year-old admits he was unsure how to react at such a young age, but is now wishing more females would show their admiration in the same way.

He says, “I was about 11 when that happened. I didn’t know what to do with myself. I was just discovering what everything was!

“That was really cool actually. I wish that would happen again. As I remember, she was very attractive. I’d be up for something now.”
