Ah, the anxiety of theatrical influence: that show biz-specific condition whereby one performer, or production, exists in the difficult shadow of another. For the art form to renew itself, plays clearly must be revisited, their tempo and temperament tested from scratch by the changing times. But that same necessity can create problems for those involved with the production at hand, which has to exist on its own terms for today's audience while being judged against some pretty powerful memories by those with the inclination — not to mention the sheer longevity — that enables them to do so.
